Spelling Words and Activities

This year, I will be running a differentiated spelling program. Each week students will be presented with four words containing some sort of common spelling pattern (i.e. words containing 'ch' or contractions), they will also have the opportunity to choose one word that they would like to learn how to spell correctly. Often, this word will be taken from their recent writing activities that they needed support with. During the week, students will be given the chance in class to practice spelling the words on their individual word lists. At the end of the week, they will take these word lists home for continued practice if needed. I will not be holding weekly spelling quizzes- I will have adequate evaluation of their spelling abilities from their writing assignments. I will be posting some spelling activities that they may wish to use at home to practice any of those tricky words.

The four weekly words that will be chosen for students are taken from the word wall list that is posted in the classroom. I will be adding them all here in this section of the blog for your reference (and if there are any keeners that want to start practicing!). Words that are chosen BY the students themselves will be added to their individual spelling dictionaries that they can reference as needed.

Every couple of weeks, students may also be presented with word sorts and activities based on their individual spelling abilities. These activities would be in addition to our weekly word lists and would be chosen to help support individual needs.
